Enligt en undersökning från BRÅ dödades 164 kvinnor av män som stod dem nära mellan år 1990 och 1999. I 40 procent av fallen fanns hot mot kvinnan dokumenterade innan gärningen. I en tredjedel av fallen finns uppgifter om att mannen tidigare misshandlat kvinnan.
Undersökningen har kritiserats av kvinnojourer för att underskatta antalet dödade, bland annat för att det är en form av brott som sällan leder till fällande domar. De menar också att uppgifterna om sambandet med händelser före mordet är missvisande låga, eftersom trakasserierna sällan kommer till myndigheternas kännedom.
