Krig

A true war story, if truly told, makes the stomach believe.
Tim O'Brien

I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity.
Dwight D Eisenhower

We should expect conflicts in which adversaries, because of cultural affinities different from our own, will resort to forms and levels of violence shocking to our sensibilities.
Department of Defense, 1999Blum, William (2003), "Rogue State", Spearhead 2003, ISBN 1 84277 221 X pb, p. 95

What kind of war do civilians suppose we fought, anyway? ... We shot prisoners in cold blood, wiped out hospitals, strafed lifeboats, killed or mistreated enemy civilians, finished off the enemy wounded, tossed the dying into a hole with the dead, and in the Pacific boiled the flesh off enemy skulls to make table ornaments for sweethearts, or carved their bones into letter openers.
Edgar L. Jones, former American war correspondent in the Pacific, 1946 Dower, John W (1993), "War without mercy", Pantheon Books, ISBN 0-394-75172-8 (pbk.), p. 64

If we see that Germany is winning, we ought to help Russia, and if Russia is winning, we ought to help Germany, and that way let them kill as many as possible, although I don't want to see Hitler victorious in any circumstances.
U.S. Vice President Harry Truman, 1941New York Times, 24 June 1941 / penpress.org 020529

Regeringsformen, 13 kap.

War is like love; it always finds a way.
Bertold Brecht

Jean-Paul Sartre

They couldn't get married; they didn't have a right to an education or a job. But they certainly had a right to kill.
Linda Moore about the mentally retarded soldiers of World War II

Show me a country where the bombs had to fall
Show me the ruins of buildings so tall
And I'll show you a young land
With many reasons why

Phil Ochs, "There But for Fortune"

Tyskarna! Just det!
George CarlinOrdfront Magasin #5/2002

The United States has a long record of bombing nations, reducing entire neighborhoods, and much of cities, to rubble, wrecking the infrastructure, ruining the lives of those the bombs didn't kill. And afterward doing nothing to repair he damage.
William Blum, in the foreword to his book "Rogue State"Blum, William (2003), "Rogue State", Spearhead 2003, ISBN 1 84277 221 X pb, p. xvii

When the rich wage war, it is the poor who die.
Jean Paul-Sartre

The civilized have created the wretched, quite coldly and deliberately, and do not intend to change the status quo; are responsible for their slaughter and enslavement; rain down bombs on defenseless children whenever and wherever they decide that their "vital interests" are menaced, and think nothing of torturing a man to death: these people are not to be taken seriously when they speak of the "sanctity" of human life, or the "conscience" of the civilized world.
James Baldwin

The draft is white people sending black people to fight yellow people to protect the country they stole from the red people.
From "Hair"

The next dreadful thing to a battle lost is a battle won.
Arthur Wellesley

We must teach our children... to resolve their conflicts with words, not weapons.
Bill Clinton, former US President, in 1999 after the Colorado school shootings, but also during the NATO bombings of Yugoslavia

War is capitalism with the gloves off.
Tom Stoppard

Carsten Palmaer

Now I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor bastard die for his country.
George S Patton Jr

The only way to abolish war is to make peace heroic.
John Dewey

A terrorist is someone who has a bomb but doesn't have an air force.
William BlumBlum, William (2003), "Rogue State", Spearhead 2003, ISBN 1 84277 221 X pb, p. 93

If my soldiers were to begin to think, not one of them would remain in the army.
Frederick the Great, King of Prussia

In the course of preparing myself... I realized afresh that I hate Churchill and all of his kind. I hate them virulently. They have stalked down the corridors of endless power all through history.... What man of sanity would say on hearing of the atrocities committed by the Japanese against British and Anzac prisoners of war, 'We shall wipe them out, everyone of them, men, women, and children. There shall not be a Japanese left on the face of the earth'? Such simple-minded cravings for revenge leave me with a horrified but reluctant awe for such single-minded and merciless ferocity.
Richard Burton, actor, in an article for the New York Times about his experience playing the role of Winston Churchill

I hate it when they say, "He gave his life for his country." Nobody gives their life for anything. We steal the lives of these kids. We take it away from them. They don't die for the honor and glory of their country. We kill them.
Admiral Gene LaRocque

War cannot be humanized, it can only be abolished.
Albert Einstein

Robert A. PapePape, Robert A. (2005): "Dying to Win", s 21.

All of us have heard this term 'preventive war' since the earliest days of Hitler. I recall that is about the first time I heard it. In this day and time ... I don't believe there is such a thing; and, frankly, I wouldn't even listen to anyone seriously that came in and talked about such a thing.
President Dwight Eisenhower, 1953, upon being presented with plans to wage preventive war to disarm Stalin's Soviet Union http://www.thenation.com/doc/20030303/schell 060404

Were [the Allies] at war with Soviet Russia? Certainly not; but they shot Soviet Russians at sight. They stood as invaders on Russian soil. They armed the enemies of the Soviet Government. They blockaded its ports, and sunk its battleships. They earnestly desired and schemed its downfall.
Winston Churchill 1929, on the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1917Micke Z (030719), "History Forgave Churchill", http://www.counterpunch.com/mickey07192003.html 030719

I've lived under situations where every decent man declared war first and I've lived under situations where you don't declare war. We've been flexible enough to kill people without declaring war.
Lewis B. Hershey, Lieutenant General and director of the Selective Service System, on the Vietnam War Petras, Ross & Petras, Kathryn: "The 776 stupidest things ever said", Doubleday 1993, ISBN 0-385-41928-7
